How can I become an officer in the Indian Army if I am a soldier? Can a soldier become an officer in The Indian Army?

Most of the people of India think that the officers of the Indian Army are from big cities and highly educated from boarding school of known cities of India.

But the reality is that the maximum numbers of officers of the Army Cadet College (ACC) are from urban and semi urban-rural areas. 

A few of the Defense officers are from rural villages too.

A large section of the Indian also believes that a soldier can not become an officer once he joins as a JAWAN. 

But it is not correct.

You may be amazed to know that the Indian Army always extend and try to take a good number of officers from the organization itself.

Because a well trained & experienced workforce is very premium and suitably employed within an early and limited training time.

I will briefly explain to you about various commission profiles available for the Personnel Below Officer Rank (PBOR) during his service.

All serving personnel should explore this possibility to utilize this facility to fulfill individual aspirations as well as the requirement of the organization to a large extend.

It is also the responsibility of the family members & friends to encourage the soldier to try and study well & prepare to become an officer in the Indian Army.

All the best efforts are available in the Armed Forces to give a maximum opportunity to soldier to explore the possibility to become an officer.

Types of Commission available for Serving Personnel

There are three types of commission available for serving personnel. Let us understand each case separately for easy understanding.

  1. Army Cadet College (ACC)
  2. Special Commissioned Officer (SCO)
  3. Special List ( Permanent commission(SL(PC)/Record Officer)(RO)

1. Army Cadet College (ACC)

  • ​Frequency: Two Times ​
  • Age: ​20-27 Years​
  • Minimum Service: 02 years​
  • Medical Category: SHAPE- 1​
  • Applicability:​All Personnel Below Officer Rank(PBOR) &  Qualification – 10+2 or equivalent​
  • Marital Status:​Unmarried/Married​
  • The Number of chances:Candidates for any one commission can avail a maximum of three possibilities. The total six opportunities for all commission in his service​
  • ACR Criteria: ​The last Annual Confidential Report(ACR) will be considered.​The individual should have granted as above average & Recommendation for commission who has not earned any ACR, and CO/OC will initiate a Special report.
  • Discipline Criteria:Candidates should not have been awarded more than one red ink entry. There is no red ink entry in the last one year​
  • Unit/Fmn level test:​A written test & interview will be conducted at unit/ formation-level by CO, and only those candidates who are having the adequate potential to become an Officer​
  • Processing of Application:​The CO/OC unit after scrutinizing the application will be sent to a higher formation​
  • The date for fwd of documents: Jan Course – 18 Nov & Jul Course –18 May​
  • Cadre Class:​10 weeks at Command HRDCs​
  • Exam Procedure:​Respective Formations will fwd names of Candidates​
  • Exam Centre:​Comd HRDC​
  • Date of Exam: Jan Course – Feb & Jul Course – Aug  
  • ​Days of Exam:​Four days, The pattern of Exam:

a) Paper I – General Mental Ability Test(GMAT)

b) Paper-II – Current General Awareness Test(CGAT)

c) Paper III – Academic content test (ACT)

d) Part IV – Interactive Communication English (ICE)​

  • Date of Result:Jan Course – Mar & Jul Course –Sep​
  • ​Declaration:​DGMT/MT-15​
  • Merit List:​Dates draw the merit list of 500 candidates (05 x batches of 100 each)​
  • Screening Test:​AEC Centre by a team comprising one GTO & One Psychologist in March & September(Mar & Sep)​
  • ​The Result:200 Candidates, are detailed for attending Young Leaders Course(YLC) remaining will be sent to Personality Development Training(PDT) at AEC Centre & Command HRDCs/individuals will appear SSB on their own​
  • Young Leaders Course (YLC) at Young Leaders Trg Wing (YTW), OTA, Chennai:

a) Vacancy – 100

b) Duration – 05 months

c) Frequency – Two times (Mar & Sep)

d) No of Chance – Maximum 02 Chances

  • Personality Development Training (PDT) at AEC Centre

a) Duration – At AEC Centre for 08 weeks (Oct & Apr)​

  • Command Headquarters – HRDC All those are not being detailed at AEC Centre are eligible to attend at Command HRDCs for 08 weeks​
  • ​Likely Date for SSB:​a) Jan Course –Sep – Novb) Jul Course –Jan-Mar
  • Training Academy:IMA Dehradun​
  • ​Duration of Training:a) 03 Years – ACC Wingb) 01 Year – IMA

2. Special Commissioned Officer (SCO)

  • Frequency:Two Times​
  • ​Age:30 – 35 Years​
  • ​Minimum Service: ​05 Years ​
  • Medical Category:​SHAPE-1​
  • ​Applicability:All PBORs​
  • ​Qualification:10+2 or equivalent​
  • Marital Status:Unmarried/Married​
  • No. of  Chances:Candidates for any one commission can avail a maximum of three chances. The total six opportunities for all commission in his service​
  • ACR Criteria:The last five ACR will be considered. The individual should have granted as above average & Recommendation for Commission, Who has not earned any                       ACR, CO/OC will initiate a special report​
  • Discipline Criteria:Candidates should not have been awarded more than one red ink entry. There is no red ink entry in the last one year​
  • ​Unit/Fmn level test:A written test & interview will be conducted at unit / formation level by CO, and only those candidates who are having the adequate potential to become an                 Officer​
  • ​Processing of Application:The CO/OC unit, after scrutinizing the application, will be sent to a higher formation. For SCO Interview up to two-level not below the rank of Brigadier

  • Applicability:​PBORs (Not to Sep) ​
  • Qualification:​10+2 or equivalent​
  • Marital Status:​Unmarried/Married​
  • No Chances:Candidates for any one commission can avail a maximum of three chances. The total six opportunities for all commission in his service.​
  • ​ACR Criteria:​The last five ACR will be considered. The individual should have granted as above average & Recommendation for Commission. Who has not earned any ACR, CO/OC will initiate a special report.​

    • It’s mandatory that you should not have any red link entry in the last one year of service. Also, the details of the offense reports are required to be given in the application duly certified by the CO/OC.
      If the charge has been committed under the AA Ser 63 and the nature of the offense is serious, then candidates are debarred from the SCO commission.
