A) There is no Pension system in CG after the pension scheme was scrapped off after 1 January 2004.
There is a scheme of Contributory Pension Scheme existing. The person has to contribute a portion of his salary to CPS, and the government contributes the same amount.
Q2. Does the Indian Coast Guard get a Veteran Quota?
A) Indian Coast Guard is an independent force under the Ministry of Defense. But Indian Coast Guard personnel do not have an ex-serviceman quota.
Likewise, Indian Coast Guard personnel also do not have MSP(Military Service Pay), Pension after voluntary retirement after 15/17 years, while they can benefit from Defense Canteen and Defense Quota in railways like the other three forces.
Q3. How is life in the Indian Coast Guard compared to IAF, Army, Navy?
A) Indian Coast Guard (ICG) is the 4th defense force and the youngest force (1978) of India after the Indian Army, Air Force, and Navy.
Life in the Indian Coast Guard is at par with other counterparts in other defense forces, with some exceptions.
1. Indian Coast Guard does not have a 4 star Rank officer like General in Indian Army, Air Chief Marshal in IAF, and Admiral in the Navy. So the highest rank possible in ICG is Director General (3 star Rank Officer)
2. You are not entitled to get Military service pay of INR 6,000 in the Indian Coast Guard despite this force being under the ministry of Defense, but the things are under consideration, and they might soon get the same.
3. They are rarely under combat situations because the Navy takes the lead in the waters for Combat situations.
4. Training of Officers in ICG occurs at Indian Naval Academy for a year, just like the Indian Navy.
Q5. What is the promotion scenario for Assistant Commandants in the Indian Coast Guard? On average, AC can reach up to which post?
A) The highest that an Assistant Commandant can reach up to is the highest rank that is Director General, Indian Coast Guard.
You start as an Assistant Commandant. Then after six years promoted to Deputy Commandant. Then after five years to Commandant (Junior Grade). After that, it is based on performance. You can make it to Commandant, then DIG, then IG, then ADG, and finally to DG.
On average, officers make it to Commandant/DIG. The pyramid structure exists here as well.
Q6. What is the Training Schedule for AC?
A) The training schedule for AC is as follows:
• 20 weeks Basic Trg in the Naval Academy
• 36 weeks afloat training onboard ICG
• 48 weeks of technical courses at various Naval schools.
• 24 weeks watchkeeping onboard Coast Guard ships
Q7. What is the Difference between the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guards?
A) Indian Coast Guard and Indian Navy are two totally different organizations with an almost similar charter of duties (work and service conditions) during peace.
As per the recent Gazette issued by the government, Coast Guard is placed uniquely. It is neither treated as an Indian Military (like the Indian army, Indian navy, and IAF) nor as a para-military force.
Since the coast guard made a lot of efforts to come under the same umbrella as the Indian military, their rules and regulations have become a mix of both.
Similarities between Indian Navy and Indian coast guard:
1. Uniform is the same as that of the Indian Navy.
2. Training occurs with Indian Navy counterparts. For officers- at INA, and for sailors at Chilka.
3. All allowances for similar service conditions (divers, sea-going allowance, hard area allowance, HRA, etc.) and deductions are the same in price as that of the Indian Navy
4. Service conditions and rules and regulations for personal are same in both i.e promotion and postings related rules. Punishment-related rules.
5. Canteen facility and medical facility are provided in both. ICG Personal are allowed to utilize and in fact, they use the military hospital facilities of the Indian Navy, army, and IAF. ICG Ships have Indian Naval medical officers.
Recommended:
Difference between Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard:
1. The officers of ICG are not commissioned officers but are Class A Gazetted officers.
2. They do not get Ex-Servicemen status after retirement.
3. Rank names are similar to para-military forces but unlike para-military forces (where above DIG rank are from IPS cadre) they have full hierarchy from their own force (earlier naval forces were also there because of lack of seniority of an officer of ICG)
4. The Defence Budget of India includes only the budget for Army, Navy, and Airforce. The ICG budget is not part of it. The ICG is paid through the ‘Civil Estimates’ of the MoD.
5. MSP (Military Service Pay) is not there in ICG.
6. ICG has NPS as a pension system, unlike the Navy which has a regular pension system.
7. Indian naval ships have heavier and superior weapons systems (missiles, heavy guns, advanced radar systems, etc.) unlike ICG ships which only have light guns.
8. Sailing routine.
Similarities between the Indian coast guard and other para-military forces:
1. Rank structure of officers.
2. NPS system for pension.
3. They are all Class A Gazetted officers.
4. Serving requirement of 20 years to qualify for pension.
5. Reservation system in eligibility at the time of joining. (Yes, they have age relaxation)
Conclusion
The selection of Assistant Commandant (AC) of the IGC is conducted bi-annually(Jan/Feb & Aug/Sep). The advertisement is given in leading national newspapers in both Hindi & English.
The selection procedure is somewhat equal to the SSB of the Armed Forces and training will be conducted under the supervision of the Indian Navy.
The IGC works in close cooperation with IN, Fisheries Department, Revenue Department & Central/State Police Force.
The role of ICG has substantially increased due to the active participation of enforcement of maritime law with jurisdiction over both territorial and international waters.
A joining letter will be issued to the individual who has been selected for training at INA, Ezhimala.
